Float in lotus ringed mountain lakes, practice yoga daily, rest in one of the adobe huts in the jungle, feast on clean vegetarian cuisine from organic gardens, visit lost kingdoms of ancient Ceylon in the surrounding sacred hills of Ulpotha. In the heart of Sri Lanka, lies Ulpotha…a lakeside village nestled in the lush foothills of the Galgiriyawa Mountains. For the majority of the year it is a working farming village focusing on reforestation, organic farming & the fostering of traditional lifestyles. A few weeks each year the village is open to visitors to enjoy it's beautiful simplicity & unique environment alongside with inspiring yoga, Ayurvedic treatments, oil massages, herbal steam baths. Ulpotha's foundations are laid upon the timeless grounds of nature, history, ritual & myth. It's philosophy is centred on the appreciation & respect for nature & tradition.
Accommodation is offered in thatched-roofed mud adobes (sleeping 2) scattered throughout the jungle village. They are built using traditional methods & materials; clay, stone, wood, pottery & fabrics which reflect village aesthetics. By design there is no electricity, life is lived by the day's natural rhythm. In the evenings oil lanterns & flares light the way.
The yoga practice will be offered twice daily. A 2 hour early morning practice will awaken the body & mind, creating vitality, energy & awareness. Evening yoga will softly explore the asanas & pranayama. Yoga nidra, silence & walking meditation will also be practiced during these evening sessions.
Meals are produced & cooked from the organic crops grown in Ulpotha. The ingredients are prepared in the indigenous style centring around highly nutritious strains of red rice, to create curries, salads, buffalo curd, local savouries, sweets & fruits. Lunch & supper are served in the main house pavilion, whilst breakfast is taken in the teahouse, where snacks & coconut water, juice & tea are available throughout the entire day.Water… in Ulpotha (ulpotha translates as water source) is from a spring fed well. It is clean & pure. There are many breath taking sites within relatively close proximity to Ulpotha such as Buddhist monasteries set within forest, temples, ruins, lakes… trips are organised on an informal basis & destinations are decided upon in accordance to the wishes of the guests. There are also many paths for walking & cycling, hills & rocks for climbing, lakes for bathing. All of which are in the immediate surrounds of the village.
